4th of July Crafts for Kids - Independence Day Projects

71

By Lily Rose

Independence Day celebrates the birthday of the United States – the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  Independence Day is celebrated on the 4th of July.  Celebrations differ from family to family, but traditions usually include a parade, picnic, or barbecue with family and friends and fireworks at nighttime.

Many young toddlers don’t even understand the significance of their own birthday, so celebrating the birthday of a country will not be an easy concept for them to grasp.  But you can do some simple things to begin creating Independence Day traditions with your kids.

You can make a birthday card with some of your child’s artwork for the United States.  Bake a birthday cake, light some candles, and sing “Happy Birthday” to the U.S.  Proudly fly the American flag and decorate your house with a red, white and blue theme.  Dress in red, white and blue, too!  Eventually, whatever traditions you start with your family will help your children to feel proud of their country.

Here are a few fun and easy 4th of July craft projects you can do with your kids:

Here's a few that my kids created a couple of days ago.

Stars and Stripes Sponge Painting

What you’ll need:

Star- and strip-shaped sponges (cut them straight or squiggly)

Red and blue tempera paint

White construction paper

How to:

Dip the star- and strip-shaped sponges into red and blue liquid tempera paint. Press onto a piece of white construction paper for a beautiful, patriotic stars and stripes painting.

Fireworks Printing (see pictures above)

You'll need:

3 plastic scouring pads (1 for each color)

Red, white and blue tempera paint

Black construction paper

To make:

Pour the paint into three flat containers, and then dip a scouring pad into one of the paint s and press it onto a piece of black construction paper (encourage your child to press gently rather than pound the scouring pad onto the paper.) Continue dipping and gently pressing, using all three colors to create an Independence Day fireworks picture.

Fourth of July Salad

You'll need:

Raspberries

Blueberries

Vanilla yogurt

To make:

Combine raspberries, blueberries and the yogurt in a small bowl, mix and serve – can’t be much simpler. Kids love to help mix things and this is a great one for them to do with you!

Flag Snacks

You'll need:

Graham crackers

White frosting

3 small containers

Red and blue food coloring

Small plastic knives or Popsicle sticks

To make:

Divide the white frosting evenly into the 3 containers. Add a few drops of red food coloring to one container and a few drops of blue to another container. Mix them well, and add more food coloring until the desired shades of red and blue are reached (one container remains white.) Help your child, or show your child how to, use a plastic knife or Popsicle stick to spread the colored frosting onto graham crackers. Have fun creating different red, white and blue designs!

A few more easy projects that we did this year:

These great wands were created with 3 different size stars cut out of felt, then glued together. We then used just the largest sized star as a backing and glued them together while sandwiching a wooden dowel in between. Lastly, we tied a patriotic

This super simple patriotic fan was created using two pieces of 8"x8" cardstock, one white and one blue. Red tape created the stripes on the white and star stickers were used on the blue paper. Glue the two papers together, sandwiching a paint stir

We (I!) cut stars in two sizes out of craft foam and strung them onto an elastic cord with cut up pieces of drinking straws between them. Holes can easily be made in the foam with a sharpened pencil. These were super easy (except all the cutting -

Funny you should say that because they are all over my case right now about being bored because I wanted to get this hub published before we start working on some 4th of July crafts, including the stars and stripes sponge craft above!

It's no fun having kids that are bored, so, yes, I do try and keep them busy!
