Bedtime Stories - Great Books for Bedtime

Reading to babies and kids has so many benefits, many of which a lot of parents are simply unaware of. In addition to bonding with your child, reading books to and with your children helps them with skills such as listening and comprehension as well as early language development and reading and spelling skills.

Those are just a few of the benefits, but my favorite is the special bond that is created and felt when simply sitting down to read a book to my kids; it’s something that we have done practically since they were born and it’s something we will continue to do.

I’ve written a couple of other hubs with reviews and recommendations of great books for kids and I thought I’d write this one to feature some good bedtime books. This flap book by Dean Hacohen is full of boldly colored beadspreads which are the flaps that you or your child flips to tuck in each baby animal.  “It’s time for bed.  Who needs to be tucked in?” is a repetitive phrase throughout the book, which makes it easy for little ones to follow and even “read” with you or by themselves. 

This book has a wonderful collection of poems from great authors, including Alfred Lord Tenyson…all the way to Mother Goose.  A great book for those kids who always say “Just one more, pleeeeese!” 

This book by Deborah Underwood discusses the many kinds of quiet that experiences throughout one’s day.  The illustrations are very lovely. 

Rooster Papa keeps trying to tell classic fairytale stories to his child, Little Red Chicken, at bedtime but she continually interrupts and blurts out the endings…a very fun and funny tale!

Beautiful illustrations in this book depict a moon-eyed owl who goes forth to discover how other creatures sleep.  A great bedtime read. 

This funny book depicts a bear who demands absolute quiet at bedtime, but a houseguest – a mouse – is everything but quiet…
