Do I Need a Hysterectomy?

59

By Lily Rose

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, and it’s an important treatment for cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer.

In the past, a large number of these procedures were also done to treat non-cancerous conditions of the uterus.  But with more effective treatments for these conditions, fewer women today need to have a hysterectomy.

So when is a hysterectomy really necessary?  If you have been diagnosed with cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer, a hysterectomy may be a lifesaving procedure that can stop the spread of cancerous cells.  It very well may be your best treatment option.

Non-cancerous (benign) conditions of the uterus include:

  • Fibroids or growths
  • Endometriosis, where you experience excess growth of tissue lining the uterus
  • Uterine prolapse, where the muscles and tissue around the pelvis weaken, causing the uterus to shift

These conditions can cause complications resulting in bleeding, pelvic pain, or difficulty controlling bladder and bowel functions.  There are medical treatments and less-invasive surgical options available to effectively manage these conditions.  When alternative therapies are not effective, a hysterectomy may be an option.

Having this procedure is a serious decision that you should carefully consider after talking to your gynecologist.  After a hysterectomy, you won’t be able to become pregnant.  A thorough discussion with your doctor of the risk, benefits, and alternatives will help you make an informed decision.

Hi Lily,

I had the oophorectomy with the hysterectomy back in 2003. Then in 2007 I was diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer. Studies are showing a womans risk goes up after a hysterectomy. Also I have heard there is evidence it matters which week of your monthly cycle the procedure is done to reduce cancer and other risks. Good to see you, Holly

@ Susanlang - feel free to contact me anytime!

@ Holly - nice to "see" you again! I hadn't heard about the timing issue - thank you fo rbringing that up - any woman going through this should definitely ask their doctor about that, too! I had just the oopherectomy because my doctors didn't see the hysterectomy as necessary; BRCA2 mutation is specific to the ovaries. They better be right! Sorry to hear you had to go through so much - how are you doing now?

@ Hello, hello - thanks for visiting!
