Literacy Games, Fun Math Games, Learning Games, and Spelling & Sight Word Games for Kids
62Do you have a child who is learning to read? My five year old is and it is very exciting. I had heard about a couple of fun games to help reinforce what she’s learned and have fun while learning more, so I went off in search of just that. In doing so, I came across the game I was looking for – Pop for Sight Words – and many other great games for children, especially for early readers.
We all know that practice makes perfect and the same goes for your children when learning something new like sight word recognition and beginning reading. One of the first steps all parents should take is to begin reading to your child early on, even when they are newborn. Reading to your child is very important because it not only can instill a lifelong love of books, but it helps them in so many other ways, like learning to use language properly and to listen and comprehend. Read more about how success in school starts with reading.
These games all include fun ways to help your child or children learn word recognition and practice their reading skills.
Pop for Sight Words by Learning Resources is adorable because it looks like your classic movie theater popcorn bag and it contains large game pieces of “popcorn” which contain a word on each one. The players take turns picking pieces of popcorn and reading aloud the word on it. If they read it correctly, they keep it and continue to build their pile; the player with the most popcorn at the end wins. There are also popcorn pieces that say “pop” and if it is selected, that player has to return all her popcorn to the bag.
Sight Word Bingo by Learning Resources is another great sight word learning game. The child must read the word on the spinner and then recognize the same word on their game card. First player to get bingo wins!
The Erudition Sight Word Game is an award-winning board game that is great for preschoolers learning their letters to early readers that can recognize the harder sight words, and all levels in-between. The object of the game is to get to the library while stopping along the way on a literacy adventure.
Learning Resources is one of my favorite brands of educational toys, and yet another great one is Money Bags a Coin Value Game, wherein kids can learn about money – earning it, spending it, making change with it and more.
