60We moved into our home a year and a half ago. We were lucky enough to be welcomed by Hurricane Fay on the morning our movers arrived with our belongings. The hurricane actually missed us, but we did get a lot of the outer band storms. So that was our “Welcome to Florida.” Little did we know about what was still to come … a welcome to the neighborhood! It was the first week in our new home and my husband and I were startled by the doorbell and a loud knocking on our front door - at 3AM!
My husband went straight for his gun then down the stairs while I went to check on our girls. The girls, thankfully, somehow, were not awakened by the loud clamor. As I exited my daughter’s room, I could hear the individuals at the door saying that they were the police. They said that they had someone in custody that they believe broke into my vehicle.
Usually my car is always in the garage, but because we had just moved in, the garage was still full of boxes, so my car was in the driveway… and I apparently forgot to lock it. It turned out to be a minor who lives 4 houses down. He apparently was trolling the neighborhood looking for unlocked cars and found mine – then helped himself to my sunglasses and GPS.
I guess he was up to no good elsewhere and someone called the police on him and when they questioned him, they found my property and when he couldn’t prove that the GPS was his, he confessed and agreed to show the police where he got it from – my car!
I’ve since learned that this kid has been a trouble maker for a while and actually lived in his home alone; his mom is in another nearby city. Well, I pressed charges and he got a slap on the hand …. Until he was arrested a couple of months later for breaking into some houses in a nearby neighborhood with some friends – he hasn’t been back to his house since then.
For quite a while after that happened, I was a little paranoid and I kept the flood lights on the corners of our house on all night, until a neighbor complained that the light shined in her bedroom too much. Our house is on a lake so we have a pretty private backyard and we had no window treatments on the back sliding glass door and windows. Our family room is in the back of the house and the couch sits directly across from all the glass doors and windows so I felt very paranoid at night that someone could be standing back there staring at me and I couldn’t see them.
Single surveillance cameras
Well, had we had one of these security monitoring systems back then, when we first moved in, my paranoia would certainly have been minimized because I could have been constantly aware of what’s going on around the perimeter of my house without having to go near a door or window. You’ll never miss a thing with one of these systems.
A diy home security system can give you peace of mind – at home or at the office – as most have the capability to be monitored (live!) via the internet or with a smart phone. You can even set up email notifications and be notified when the camera detects motion – some will even send you a snapshot from the camera that sensed the motion.
These monitored security systems are designed to work 24/7 and most come with a DVR that’ll record constantly or only when motion is detected; you decide how you want it set up. The cameras included in these systems usually have a 30 to 40-foot night vision range.
Feel safe and secure knowing that your property and your valuable possessions are being monitored 24/7 – you can even check in while you’re on vacation! Should something happen, having the ability to have a picture will make it easier to catch a perpetrator, unlike just having a simple audible alarm system.
Another great benefit of a do it yourself home security system is that you pay once for the system and then there are no additional fees involved – no monthly access fees to use it, not even for the internet viewing capability. In my opinion, a house security system is a very wise and worthwhile investment.
